22. Parmenides
of Elea
(in Ancient Greek Παρμενίδης
ὁ Ἐλεάτης) is standing at the bottom of the stairs, on the left. He's got dark hair and
beard, wearing a yellow tunic and a bluish and reddish cloak. He's
holding a thick book on his hand and leaning it on its knee. He is pointing at a line on the book and seems to be
talking to
Pithagoras, the bald guy sitting on his right.
He
lived in the
5th century BC in Elea,
a Greek colony city on the Southern coast of Italy. He was famous as an ancient
Greek philosopher,
the founder of the Eleatic
school, very theoretical. In his poem,
On
Nature,
which he wrote, he said that there are
two views of reality:
first, if you look at reality in "the way of truth" (a part of the poem), you can see how reality is one, and change
is impossible, so existence
is timeless, uniform, necessary, and unchanging. Then, in "the
way of opinion," he explains the world of appearances: if you look at reality relying on your sensory faculties they will lead you to conceptions which are false and
deceitful.
His
theories are based on ideas and not in physical demonstrations, that
is why he is on the left part of the painting, influenced by the god
Apolo, who represents the Arts and Beauty. These ideas strongly
influenced the whole of Western
philosophy, perhaps most notably through their effect on Plato.

In general, it was an essential base of all the things that we have nowadays , since to create theories it is necessary to do hypothesis , which was not done before either.
